Lucas Gallo – 1982 (2019)

Synopsis
In 1982, the Argentine military dictatorship invaded the Falkland Islands, located 500 kilometers off the country’s coast. The government left no stone unturned in using propaganda to convince the people of the righteousness of their mission.

Consisting almost entirely of excerpts from the TV program 60 minutos, 1982 summarizes the media campaign that took place over the 74 days of war, when Argentine troops tried to take the island back from the British. We watch TV anchormen ask viewers to donate money for weapons, inspire them to sing the national anthem at home, and welcome government leaders as heroes as they “spontaneously” show up at the studio to celebrate the importance of the mission for the fatherland.

It’s very clever how this montage of archive material—the actual research subject here—reflects the power of media while at the same time placing the propaganda in the spirit of the times. The screen-in-screen editing style popular at the time transports us to the average Argentine living room of 1982, which only amplifies the absurdity of all the “good news.”

Longinotto presents several different Kenyan women with the opportunity to speak out about their experiences. Interviews with several elders explore the importance of continuing the ritual, while other young women describe their own painful memories. Nurse Fardhosa is introduced as a woman who travels through Nairobi villages educating people about the physical and emotional destruction caused by the tradition. Also included is a group of runaway girls who try to use the court system to protect them from being forced into circumcisions. Going for a dramatic approach, this installment takes a look at the changing world of nature, from the sky to the sea to the sun to the insects to volcanic action to the planet itself. It’s nature’s strange and intricate designs for survival and her many methods of perpetuating life in this spectacular story. It takes a lot to make nature footage dramatic but here we are and it’s quite a sight. It’s exciting, beautifully shot and photographed, sometimes a little suspenseful, though it might not look like it at the start of it. Experience nature’s Secrets of Life and witness the wonder of it all with this solid and visually splendid True-Life Adventure!

Kim Longinotto & Ziba Mir-Hosseini – Runaway [+Extras] (2001)

Quote:
At first nothing strikes you out of the usual with Runaway. It is a straightforward documentary of exchanges between counselors at a women’s shelter and adolescent girls who have run away from abusive homes. Their conversations and their daily activities are captured with authenticity and simplicity.

A diverse range of experience is depicted. The tragedies of incest, arranged marriages, partner abuse, and oppressive parents will resonate with adolescents everywhere. What make Runaway unique are the stories brought to us from a corner of our world where the girls have few means of escape or refuge. Reyhaneh House, the setting of this film, is Iran’s first home for fugitive girls. Located in Tehran, it is a rare institution, struggling to survive and to address what is escalating into a national crisis. According to The Independent (London, November 13, 2000) only 13 of the 45 girls reported missing each day return home. The remainder are believed to be raped and/or killed.

Runaway is a poignant documentary, which advocates for very basic human rights. In a country where the government sets the marriage age at nine for girls and fourteen for boys, where family problems are culturally never discussed outside the home, where woman are at best considered chattel, admitting to the existence of runaways would be an embarrassment to the virtues of an Islamic government. Runaway is a breakthrough for bringing to light the unarguable need for a host of Reyhaneh Houses.

The film’s subtitles and overall filming is not very crisp, but its message is clear. The film could be successfully used to spearhead discussion among a broad audience in high schools, colleges, and public library settings.

Six years worth of footage shot in Alberta, Canada has been condensed into a 72-minute documentary which offers a unique and touching look at the daily lives of animals such as polar bears, walruses, goldeneyes, wolverines, and, of course, lemmings. One of the most amusing and tender moments perhaps is when a young polar bear slips down a hill and as he slides, the music takes on a comical turn, as if it were a practiced circus act. This documentary is filled with such little moments which make it all the more enjoyable.

Jean-Pierre Melville’s independent and original approach to film-making on titles such as Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, and Le Samourai earned him the reputation of the father, or at least the precursor, of the French New Wave. However, what is less known is that Melville spent eight years of his life between 1937 and 1945 as a soldier in the French army and then the Free French Forces, which he joined after the French defeat the Germans. Having escaped through the South of France to Spain, he became a member of the Resistance and took on the code name of Melville (after Herman Melville, the writer he most admired). He used the name for the rest of his life. This fascinating documentary examines how Melville’s life experience impacted on his choice of projects, his aesthetics and his working methods in the world of film. Real insight is gained through interviews with surviving family members, and his work is examined by those who worked closely with him including Volker Schlondorff (TIN DRUM) and Bertrand Tavernier (ROUND MIDNIGHT).

Deborah Stratman – In Order Not to Be Here (2002)

Synopsis
An uncompromising look at the ways privacy, safety, convenience and surveillance determine our environment. Shot entirely at night, the film confronts the hermetic nature of white-collar communities, dissecting the fear behind contemporary suburban design. An isolation-based fear (protect us from people not like us). A fear of irregularity (eat at McDonalds, you know what to expect). A fear of thought (turn on the television). A fear of self (don’t stop moving). By examining evacuated suburban and corporate landscapes, the film reveals a peculiarly 21st century hollowness… an emptiness born of our collective faith in safety and technology. This is a new genre of horror movie, attempting suburban locations as states of mind.

Kazuhiro Sôda – Engeki 2 AKA Theatre 2 (2012)

Can the theatre arts survive in the 21st century?

If Theatre 1 is about the world of Hirata, Theatre 2 is a feature documentary, which depicts the relationship between Hirata and the world we live in. In order for his art and his not-so-commercial company to survive this highly capitalistic modern society, what kind of strategy does Hirata have and practice?

Through the fascinating spirit and creativity of Oriza Hirata, Kazuhiro Soda’s THEATRE 1 & 2 evokes a plurality of dimensions cleverly portrayed as inseparable aspects of the same problem: pedagogy vs. performance, culture vs. politics, individual creation and experiences vs. collective involvement and responsibilities. A tale of art in our time, THEATRE 1 & 2 is one of those rare and precious acts of filmmaking that delves deep into the essence of culture.

Train was full of with film prints, editing tables, actors and it traveled through Soviet Union, films were made in one day, edited at night and very next day shown to the people, who participated in it, as Marker says.

Kim Longinotto & Ziba Mir-Hosseini – Divorce Iranian Style (1998)

Quote:
Divorce Iranian Style challenges preconceptions about what life is like for women in Iran. The most startling thing about the film is simply that it was made. The filmmakers follow the cases of three women who are attempting to divorce their husbands. Although Iranian religious law frowns on divorce, a man is allowed to claim the privilege without needing to show cause, provided he pays his ex-wife compensation. A woman, however, can only sue for divorce if she can prove that her husband is sterile or mad, or if he agrees to let her out of their marriage contract. In the last case, the compensation becomes the bargaining chip: the man will sometimes give his wife her freedom if he doesn’t have to pay.

The women are assertive, demanding, and persistent to a degree that confounds stereotypes of oppression. They challenge the judge, badger the uncooperative clerk for misplaced files, chew out their husbands and their husbands’ families. At one point, the judge tells a little girl (the daughter of the court stenographer who has been a fixture in the court from the age of two months) that he has a man picked out for her who’s “not like the riffraff that come in here.” The girl has a more radical plan: “I won’t marry ever, now that I know what husbands are like.

“French director Alain Cavalier ventures into pseudo-documentary territory with his 2002 film René. Purportedly concocted as a means for Cavalier to help actor Joël Lefrançois lose weight while not making a straight documentary about Lefrançois’ ordeal, René instead focuses on fictional children’s theater actor René (Lefrançois) from provincial France who is undergoing a bit of a personal crisis. Having just been abandoned by his girlfriend, René decides dieting is the only way to win back her love. The portly actor proceeds to reevaluate his old lifestyle in order to meet his goal of shedding pounds, and in the process, he gets a chance to revise his personality and examine his life from an entirely different point of view. It should be noted that over the course of filming, Lefrançois did actually lose nearly 70 pounds. René was in competition at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival.”

An interesting documentary about an interesting man, to say the least. Kazuo Hara follows up his controversial work “The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On” with a bio-documentary about Mitsuharu Inoue, a famous and popular (especially among women) post-war Japanese writer. The film follows the last few years of the life of Inoue before he dies of cancer in 1992. The film starts out as a usual bio-documentary like many others, but the second half of the film digs into the writer’s past and comes up with some unexpected discoveries.

Ayo Akingbade – So They Say (2019)

British Nigerian filmmaker and artist Ayo Akingbade’s new short is a beautifully made look at the legacy of London anti-racist activist group Newham Monitoring Project and two cases they helped bring to accountability and justice: the 1984 murder of Eustace Pryce and 1985’s “Newham 7” trial. With clever, fluid editing, it blends reenactment, interviews, archival documents and contemporary street shooting into an intricate and brightly colored tapestry of past and present.

Akingbade is a meticulous researcher. She brought her recreations of the Newham Monitoring Project to life from B&W photos of their 90s office, decorating them with real ephemera from the NMP and IRR Black History archives. Akingbade also made sure to feature clippings, posters and fliers that included the popular lingo of the time – as the continued use of many of these political phrases suggested striking continuities between NMP’s history and present day struggles.

“I was quite assiduous, thinking and reading about the history of political Blackness in the UK, community activism and everything to do with racial injustice. I wanted the audience to be transported back. It was very important to make the viewer understand that not much has changed since the 1980s. Like Kenny Pryce says at the end, “I think many things are still the same, I think the racism in education is still there, in housing, within employment… it’s just taken a different form. But the convert ways of attacking, they’re still there.” AYO AKINGBADE

Der Riese (The Giant), 1983
by Harun Farocki

[Harun Farocki gave the following introduction at a screening of Michael Klier’s Der Riese as part of the #VIDEOTAPES series at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in January 2014. Special thanks to the N.B.K. for their permission to reproduce the following text for ERC’s screening of Der Riese on April 29th, 2015 at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. Translated by Fjoder Donderer. Edited by Ekrem Serdar and Jennifer Stob.]

Michael Klier’s film is composed of images taken from surveillance cameras. In 1983, video surveillance was still a novelty. When in those days one was filming in the street, even if just with a video camera, passers-by would stop and ask when it was going to be broadcast. One assumed the person handling a camera was of a certain importance. Today, digital cameras are integrated in all sorts of devices, such as the locomotives of model railways, and in almost every mobile phone. A camera today has no greater value than a ball-point pen.

And soon one will probably find it insulting to be given a camera as a gift. Being filmed is also something most people have become accustomed to. They do not disturb the film shoot by waving or by looking into the camera. They know that they are constantly, in a way, indirect persons of contemporary history, and have thus forfeited the right to their own image.

In 1992, during the war of the Allies against Iraq, the press office of the U.S. military released special surveillance images: images from cameras that were installed at the nose of projectiles approaching their targets. Filming bombs with disposable cameras. It was said that these projectiles were intelligent weapons and so the two terms “surveillance images” and “intelligent” suddenly attained some proximity.

When in 1983, for instance, there was a monitor in a subway station with the image of the platform, many looked at it. What was there to see? An image, perhaps not attractive, but at least out of the ordinary: an image that was not intended to entertain or educate. That didn’t actually want to be an image. The camera helped the driver survey the platform, as a mirror would have done. The channel function of the medium. Technical images, operational images.

The French philosopher Roland Barthes postulated an operational language, as opposed to the common mythological one ¹. The lumberjack who fells the tree, speaks the tree and not about the tree. Hard to imagine that an image can be nothing but a tool – but their ambition to be nothing but a tool has quickly generated attention for surveillance images.

In the film M (1931) the police set up a dragnet in search of a child murderer. There is a letter claiming responsibility, written on a warped surface. Police officers make house calls to all convicts of sexual assault of children and check if any tabletops there have warped surfaces.

In Hamburg in the early 1980s, during the dragnet for terrorists, the police first investigated who did not pay their electricity and gas bills by direct debit, but in cash at post offices. These were just a few hundred people. Then anyone over 60 was ruled out. In this way, the apartments of the terrorists were located.

This method is hardly heroic. It counters the desire to murder a child or the terrorist act with a dispassionate, structural investigation.

Guided weapons today are controlled from desks, at fixed working hours, and without the perpetrators having to leave their families. War is no longer a state of emergency.

For crime or police films today it must be increasingly hard to describe the fight against crime as anything other than a bureaucratic act.

We pay for the images we watch on television—although not much, hardly more than for heating—however, we have to pay people to watch surveillance images. They do not get much. Experts have been working on image processing, on sensors that automatically recognize anything dangerous or illegal for a long time now.

Before cameras were so cheap that you could get them for next to nothing, Klier abstained from his own image-making and drove around for months with a recording device, recording surveillance images and also copying archival ones.

He called his film The Giant. A giant is strong but not particularly intelligent. One can well imagine the giant, when watching images taken by cameras from a great height. The invisible giant clumsily pans the camera and pulls the zoom. He tries to frame a sailboat, a pair of lovers. He takes pictures of what is “beautiful,” what he therefore wants, or he wants to beautify what he wants to have.

With his montage and its musical accompaniment, Klier puts images in the subjunctive form: could these be the images of a film narrative? A productive misconstruction.♦
